🍣 Japanese

Japanese food divides clearly by cooking style: rice bowls (donburi), noodles (ramen, udon, soba), sushi and sashimi, and fried dishes like tempura and katsu. That makes it easy to choose by the texture you're craving.

Soy sauce, miso and bonito broth form the base, so most dishes aren't spicy. Even among rice bowls, gyudon is fairly light while katsudon is very filling.

Tips for choosing

  • If you need something non-spicy, Japanese food is the easiest choice. Zaru soba and udon are light; tonkotsu ramen and katsu curry are hearty.
  • Sushi, sashimi and kaisendon are served cold and raw. Leave them out if you don't eat raw fish.
  • Many broths are made with bonito flakes (fish), so check soups too if you have a fish allergy.
